A variety of Jewish groups are offering educational and recreational online resources. Below is a sampling of those. The Reporter will publish additional listings as they become available.
Roundtable will hold the virtual course “America’s Jewish Women: From Emma Lazarus to Ruth Bader Ginsburg” on Wednesday, December 11 and 18, from 2-3 pm. The cost to attend is $88. The course will offer stories about Jewish women in American history and their impact on politics, literature and more. For more information or to register, click here.
The Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion offers two new podcasts: “Heritage Words,” an initiative that collects and engages with words from ancestral Jewish languages, (available here); and “Kanfei Ruach” (Wings of Spirit) that speaks about different types of Jewish prayer (available here).
ALEPH will hold the virtual course “Experiencing the Way of David and the Prophets: Part 2,” led by Jeff “KD” Meyers on Sunday, December 15, at 7 pm. The experiential class “will continue to explore the Way of the Prophets with an added focus on how psychedelics may serve as catalysts for expanded states of consciousness including prophetic consciousness.” For more information or to register, click here.
Ritualwell will hold the virtual series “The Hidden Light of Hanukkah: Preparing for the Holiday with Meditation and Poetry” on Thursdays, December 5, 12 and 19, from noon-1:30 pm. The cost to attend is $150. Participants will be “engaging in mindfulness meditation, poetry and generative writing practices to explore themes related to the holiday, including hidden light, miracles, resilience and gratitude.” For more information or to register, click here.
Jewish Women’s Archive has opened the application process for those interested in its “Pomegranate Writing Fellowship for Jewish Women of Color.” The year-long fellowship seeks to “support the development of their talents, provide a platform that amplifies their voices and builds the field of Jewish women of color thought leaders.” The application deadline is Monday, December 16. Hadassah Magazine will hold the virtual event “One Book, One Hadassah: ‘Tap Dancing on Everest’” on Thursday, December 19, at 7 pm. Author and women’s health advocate Dr. Mimi Zieman will discuss her memoir with Hadassah Magazine Executive Editor Lisa Hostein. For more information or to register, click here.
The Qesher Book Club will offer the following Book Club talks: Jennifer Lang about her memoir, “Places We Left Behind,” on Tuesday, December 3, at 3 pm (available here); Debra Brunner on her historical work “We Remember Lest the World Forget – Memories of the Minsk Ghetto” on Tuesday, December 10, at 3 pm (available here); and Julie Metz on her book about her mother “Eva and Eve” on Tuesday, January 7, at 3 pm (available here).
The American Jewish University will hold the virtual book talk “What Does Jewish Look Like?” with authors Liz Kleinrock and Caroline Kusin Pritchard on Tuesday, December 10, at 3 pm. For more information or to register, click here.
Roundtable will hold the three-part virtual class “Jews and Photography in the 20th Century: From Stieglitz to Sontag” on Thursdays, December 5-12, from 11 am-noon. The cost to attend is $132. Michael Berkowitz will explore “the ways in which Jewish thinkers and Jewish photographers intertwined with the history of photography, focusing on the period between the 1920s and the 1960s.” For more information or to register, click here.
Tikvah will offer the 10-part online course “Creativity and Confrontation: The History of Medieval Jewry” with Rabbi Dr. Jacob J. Schacter. He will discuss “medieval Jewish history and its significance to the story of the Jewish people.” Lectures will be released weekly and can be viewed at any time. 18Doors will hold the virtual program “December Together: A Conversation by and for Interfaith Couples about Navigating the December Holidays” on Thursday, December 12, from 7-8 pm. The Institute for Jewish Spirituality will hold the virtual conversation “An evening with IJS President & CEO, Rabbi Josh Feigelson, in conversation with Joshua Leifer,” the author of “Tablets Shattered: The End of an American Jewish Century and the Future of Jewish Life,” on Wednesday, December 11, from 1:30-2:30 pm. The American Jewish University will hold the virtual program “Blending Traditions: Celebrating Chanukah in Diverse Families” on Sunday, December 8, from 9-10:30 pm. The cost to attend is $35. My Jewish Learning will hold the six-part virtual class “An Intro to Maimonides” with Professor Lenn Goodman, on Thursdays, December 5-January 9, at 8:30 pm. The cost to attend is $80. Goodman “will discuss a range of topics Maimonides covered in his writings, from law to prophecy to religion.
